Living in Letterkenny

Letterkenny, a growing and lively town located in the North West of Ireland in County Donegal. It is situated at the base of Lough Swilly, about a half-hour's drive from Derry City. Driving time from Dublin or Galway is about three and half-hours.

The population of Letterkenny is over 16,500 and growing. It is the major commercial and services centre of North Donegal. There are two shopping centres and a good variety of shops, pubs, clubs etc. There is a new Leisure Centre with indoor and outdoor sports facilities, a swimming pool, a library, a theatre, a vibrant arts centre, a six-screen cinema, numerous golf clubs, pitch and putt, 10-pin bowling, astro turf playing surfaces, and an athletics track.

Poised at the mouth of the deep and lovely Lough Swilly, the town grew in the 17th century from a small fishing village to a prosperous town and the Ecclesiastical Seat for the Diocese of Raphoe.

Letterkenny’s name comes from the Gaelic Leitir Ceannain meaning Hillside of the O’Canainn clan, the earliest recorded overlords of this Swilly region. Letterkenny is now a busy working town but with all the major amenities that accompany a location of this scale.

 

The landscape of Co. Donegal is spectacular and varied. There are rugged mountains, miles of indented coastline and wonderful beaches. Those of you who enjoy the great outdoors will find that Letterkenny and Co. Donegal have a great deal to offer.
